I never realized that my hair hated protein so much until I started using the low porosity, protein-free shampoo, conditioner and leave-in detangler by Shea Moisture. There is also a high porosity line so when I first heard about the two lines of products, I just assumed high porosity would be best for my hair. Just to be sure, I did the water test. That’s when you take a strand of your clean, dry hair and put it into a glass of water, at room temperature, to see if the strand sinks to the bottom of the glass over 1/2 hour or if it floats on top. Well my strand just floated on top so I took that as gospel and picked up the low porosity line in the orange bottles from my local Target.
For me, the key ingredient is glycerin. It is the first, second and third ingredient in the leave-in detangler, conditioner and shampoo respectively. It bathes my hair in moisture like I’ve never experienced before. My hair has a bouncy, lightweight feel to it. Just to test things, I used my usual shampoo with protein in it for one week after I’d started my regimen of low porosity and I could immediately tell the difference. My hair was back to being stiff and un-moving. Now I’m back on my glycerin based, protein-free, low porosity regimen and my hair loves this stuff. If it becomes over-moisturized, I’ll use a deep conditioner with light protein in it.
